Mead is a quintessentially family-oriented Spokane suburb. The Mead School District is one of the strongest in the metro and the housing stock reflects it. Most homes are 1990s and 2000s single-family two-story with attached two-car garages. Hastings and Wandermere have older 1980s and earlier housing with the occasional pre-1980 farmhouse.

Mead sits in a lowland that holds what blows in. The community spreads across flat ground near 1,900 feet where Deadman Creek runs toward the Little Spokane River, with pine hills rising above 2,300 feet on either side. It also holds the winter wood-smoke that settles over north Spokane from November through February, when fine-particulate readings across the area climb well above summer levels. A lot of Mead runs on the highway. Most households here commute south on US 395 and the North Spokane Corridor or down Newport Highway into the city, and on winter mornings that means salt, sand, and gritty snowmelt walked straight through the entry and mudroom. Homes on the Mount Spokane side along State Route 206 see it worst once the hill opens for the season.
